gunk (/gʌŋk/, [guhngk]) – noun, informal. any sticky or greasy residue or accumulation; mud on the sea floor, typical of small creeks, coves, marshes, sloughs, and rivers.

gunkhole - noun, informal. a quiet anchorage, as in a remote cove or small bay, used by small yachts.

gunkholing - verb, informal. boating term referring to a type of cruising in shallow or shoal water, as a slow pace, meandering from place to place, spending the nights in isolated coves and serene anchorages, away from the maddening crowds at marinas. Best enjoyed by those cruising by sailboat or trawler.
